FAQ’S

A Buddy Belt is a harness designed to reduce stress on your pet’s neck.
Buddy Belt has a unique patented design that makes it easy to use. It has only one buckle and slips on in seconds. The most important aspect of the design is the reduction of pressure on the throat or trachea. Pressure on this area over time has been shown to cause problems. In some cases, this pressure can significantly affect your dog’s health and, potentially, its lifespan.
Buddy Belts are made of leather. Before initial wear, it is highly recommended that you treat your Buddy Belt with a quality water and stain repellent product. If your Buddy Belt gets wet, allow it to dry flat at room temperature. Never put leather in the dryer or near a heat source. For suede Buddy Belts, buff with a soft towel to restore the surface. Try to avoid products with silicone and/or wax as these ingredients tend to break down the natural oils in leather. Apply product initially and every two to three months after with regular wear. Please note that the Buddy Belt is not intended for swimming or other full water play. To clean your Buddy Belt, gently blot liquid stains with a damp cloth. In the event of salt stains from winter wear, wipe with a clean, damp cloth after each wear and dry naturally. Re-treat as necessary.
The first Buddy Belt was made for ‘Buddy’, a miniature Dachshund. He was coughing and pulling. Other harnesses were complicated to use and were bulky on his body. Also, other harnesses had a strap that pressed on his trachea.
Buddy Belts are available in 11 sizes to meet the needs of most dogs sized teacup, toy and standard (2 to 100+ pounds).
Buddy Belt has been very successful for most breeds. Breeds with extremely thin bodies or dogs that are very large (over 100 pounds) may require custom made Buddy Belts.
From a puppy to adulthood, the average dog will require 3 Buddy Belts. A Buddy Belt, if taken care of properly, will last many years. Buddy Belt wearers usually have one Buddy Belt for everyday wear and one for special occasions. There are many Buddy Belt wearers that have a different Buddy Belt for every occasion
Please see our Measure & Fit page for step-by-step instructions to properly fit your pet with a Buddy Belt harness.
First of all it’s important to remember that all dogs are unique and some may be more sensitive and need more time to adjust to their new Buddy Belt. In very rare instances a dog may experience sensitivity around the front armpit areas. As with a new pair of leather shoes, there may be some discomfort before the Buddy Belt is broken in. It is important to monitor your dog’s behavior when first wearing their Buddy Belt. Observe how they walk as well as inspect their underarm area after initial periods of wear. Extra soft removable Buddy Belt liners are recommended for sensitive dogs or simply as added comfort until the Buddy Belt softens and customizes it’s shape to fit your dog.
Yes. Buddy Belt continues to be tried and tested in the field. Both animal chiropractors and veterinarians have been endorsing the use of a Buddy Belt.
There have been hundreds of testimonials supporting the Buddy Belt, including a few life saving and life altering stories. In one case a small Westie was being attacked by a large dog. The owner’s instinct was to get her dog into her arms as quickly as possible. She succeeded by swinging around and lifting her dog by the leash up into her arms. Because the dog was small, and because the Buddy Belt did not put pressure on its neck, the dog was lifted safely into the arms of her owner. On another occasion a dog fell off the edge of a cliff and was safely lifted back up. Other dogs’ lives have improved simply due to the fact that there is no more stress on their throat. The Buddy Belt design has also made it easier to use for people with fine-motor difficulty.
Yes. However, precautions should be taken if a Buddy Belt is left on a puppy, any sensitive dogs or a dog that is known to ‘chew’. If a dog is being crated for any period of time it is recommended that the Buddy Belt be removed.
The Buddy Belt design reduces both stress and resistance on the neck, spine and throat. Buddy Belt gives back a dog’s mobility, allowing it to sniff and walk comfortably. This freedom naturally reduces the pulling.
A Buddy Belt can be worn in the rain. As it is made of leather, it is highly recommended that you treat your Buddy Belt with a quality water and stain repellent product. If your Buddy Belt gets wet, allow it to dry flat at room temperature. Never put leather in the dryer or near a heat source. Refer to question 3, above, for full care instructions.

Buddy Belt is a premium product. Before discovering the Buddy Belt, several users said they spent a lot more money buying collars and harnesses that simply did not work, or that were difficult to use. Buddy Belt’s value lies in its design, fabrication and function, and in the fact that it provides better health and well being for both the dog and the owner.
Both the leash and ID tags are attached to the sliding o-ring. The o-ring slides to accommodate leash mobility while the Buddy Belt stays snugly in place. ID tags may also be attached to a BB Matching ID Collar.
The Buddy Belt design and production process requires a material that is ‘self-healing’. This means that once the material is cut, the edges will not fray. Leather is a natural material that has self-healing properties. Not only is leather durable, it also softens and moulds to the body for a custom fit. It is very important to note that leather is tear and puncture resistant.
In some cases the leather and oil can create a problem, but this usually cleans up easily with mild soap and water. It is best to allow the treatment to sit for a few hours, if possible, before wearing the Buddy Belt.
